Cooling tower discipline: water quality, blowdown, and drift control

An open cooling tower can save energy, but it also adds water-treatment responsibility. The tower becomes a maintenance system as much as a heat-rejection asset, which means water chemistry, drift loss, basin condition, and blowdown strategy all matter.

  • Monitor conductivity, cycles of concentration, and make-up water quality.
  • Inspect drift eliminators, basin condition, and fill for fouling or damage.
  • Verify blowdown control is aligned with operating water chemistry.

In high-density cooling plants, poor tower discipline can create scaling, corrosion, and efficiency loss long before a hard fault appears. The best operators treat water treatment data as plant telemetry, not as a separate facilities report.
